No goal, no results – how to connect goals to formats

Zonder doel geen resultaat – zo koppel je doelen aan formats

A campaign without a goal is like a banner without a message: a waste of your budget. Yet it happens more often than you think. Creatives get made “because we have to”, formats get chosen “because that’s how it’s done” and everyone hopes for the best. But that is not how it works anymore. Content needs to be targeted. At attention, consideration or action. The format you choose should strengthen that goal, not hold it back.

In this blog we explain how to make smart format choices based on your campaign goal. No theory, but practical pointers you can apply directly in your own production flow.

The feed is crowded enough already. Know what you want to achieve, or you’ll disappear among the rest.

Start with the goal, not the format

We see it often: there is already a wish for a video or banner set, but the goal is still vague. Do you want to build awareness? Stimulate consideration? Force conversion? Each goal demands a different kind of attention and a different way of communicating. So before you think about whether it should be a social ad or a display banner, ask yourself this simple question: What do I want the audience to do after seeing my ad?

Only once that is clear do you choose the right format. Not the other way around.

Awareness demands impact in one second

Campaigns in the awareness stage have to stop the scroll. That means: big visuals, strong contrasts, and a recognizable brand in the first second. You don’t need to explain anything yet — you just want people to see you and remember you.

Think short videos of 6-10 seconds, vertical formats for Reels and TikTok, or HTML5 banners with smart animations. It is all about claiming attention. Short, powerful and visually over-the-top. Because if you don’t make an impression in the first second, you’ve lost them.

Consideration is about depth

Once your audience already knows you, you can go a little deeper. Here there is room to show added value, name benefits or briefly explain a product. Think mid-length videos (15-30 sec), carousels, or interactive banners that add just that extra layer.

In this stage, storytelling is your biggest asset. You want to evoke recognition, tap into needs or remove barriers. But beware: attention remains fleeting. So make your story modular, bite-sized for every channel, and make sure everything connects visually.

Action? No distractions, just clicks

In conversion-focused advertising, what counts is: how do you get someone to click, order or fill something in? Use clear CTAs, short copy and sizes that work in performance channels.

HTML5 banners with product feeds, DCO creatives or conversion-optimized social ads do well here. In this stage, visual consistency and speed are crucial. No extra frills — just recognizability and urgency.

One message, multiple forms

The beauty is: you don’t have to keep reinventing the wheel. In fact, that is a waste of time and budget. By thinking ahead about how to roll out one message across different formats, you save yourself a lot of frustration. This is called content atomization: a smart approach where you translate one central message into different assets, each tailored to its own stage or channel.

That way you keep it visually consistent, substantively relevant and scalable, without losing creativity.

Producing smart = performing better

At Banny we work every day on campaigns where everything fits: from message to format. And we notice that the best results come from a clear structure. Knowing which goal you want to reach and which formats fit it. And above all: knowing how to scale fast without compromising on quality.

So next time you need a creative, don’t start with “We want a 20-second video.” Start with the goal. The rest follows naturally.
