The first second is sacred. Here’s how to make it rock-solid

De eerste seconde is heilig. En zo maak je die ijzersterk

Your ad gets only one chance. One moment in which someone decides whether to keep watching, or scroll mercilessly past you. In a world full of stimuli, that first second is not a detail — it is sacred. In this blog you’ll read how to make maximum impact in minimal time – and how Banny helps you do it lightning-fast and at scale.

If you miss that first second, you’ve lost them — they just scroll right on past.

Why is the first second so important?

Within one second, your audience decides whether to stick around. That second determines the success of your entire campaign.

Research shows that nearly half of the impact of a video ad falls within the first 3 seconds – and often in the very first. People scroll at lightning speed and filter on gut feeling. If you don’t plant a hook there, they are gone before your message even began.

For Maríe-Stella-Maris we built opening shots that pull you in close right away: close-ups of water on skin, moving softly. Within half a second you are in the mood and you know: this is no standard ad. What is crucial is showing who the sender is within the first second. If that is not clear from the very first frame, a viewer drops off.

What works for grabbing attention instantly?

Use visual triggers such as contrast, movement or faces to activate the brain. Start with something the brain cannot ignore.

Our brains respond lightning-fast to bright colors, faces and sudden movement. Use that power to visually "hook" before someone realizes it is an ad. Audio helps, but visuals are crucial – especially on platforms where sound is off by default.

For FOAM we built an ad with powerful colors and a hand in slow motion. In the first 0.5 seconds it already felt like art, not an advertisement. The viewer stayed – exactly the goal.

How do you give your message meaning in just one second?

A sharp question or unexpected statement can be enough. Relevance without explanation, that is the trick.

Think in hooks: urgency (“Did you know you’re already missing this?”), recognition (“Everyone knows this feeling”) or contrast (“This looks expensive, but it isn’t”). That first line or visual trigger should be the start of a story you can feel within 5 seconds.

What happens if you miss that first second?

Then you have almost certainly lost the viewer. And that means: wasted budget.

Data shows that up to 74% of viewers are gone after five seconds. And if your opening frame doesn’t work, the algorithm punishes you with worse reach and higher costs. In short: no hook, no impact.

How do you make strong first-second creatives scalable?

By automating smartly and thinking ahead about audience, channel and pacing. Only then can you truly test and optimize.

Banny doesn’t just deliver "assets", but first-frame concepts: ads designed to hook from second one. Optimized for every channel, per audience and in multiple variants. Ready for A/B tests, algorithms and stopping power.

For Albert Heijn we deliver weekly HTML5 variants with ever-new hooks: smoke for barbecue promotions, bright colors for discount days, Christmas lights for the winter range. It all revolves around that first moment.

How do you know if that first second works?

Look at drop-offs, scroll-stops and view-through rates in the first 3 to 10 seconds. Those numbers say it all.

Whoever sticks around in the first seconds often keeps watching. Facebook itself reports: 65% of viewers who stay for 3 seconds then watch at least to 10 seconds. So optimize for hook performance, not just for clicks.

Ready for a better first impression?

The first second is not a detail, it is the campaign. Let your strategy start there — and your creative too. Banny helps you make that opening power scalable, without delay. Everything ready to make impact from moment one.

They're good and always deliver fast. Definitely recommended.
